Restoring a Landmark: The New Life of Old City Hall
A Legacy of Design and Purpose
Built in 1929, Old City Hall has long stood as a symbol of civic pride in New Braunfels. Designed by Jeremiah Schmidt, the building embodied the optimism of early 20th-century architecture, defined by clean lines, geometric precision, and Art Deco detailing that was both modern and timeless. Its tile floors, warm wood interiors, and period lighting fixtures told a story of nearly a century of service, craftsmanship, and community.
But architecture, like cities themselves, must evolve. Over time, the building’s role diminished, and admiration alone wasn’t enough to preserve its spirit. It needed a new purpose—one that could carry its story forward.

“At Dibello Architects, we believe that meaningful architecture doesn’t fade, it adapts.”
A New Vision Through Adaptive Reuse
Our collaboration with Wiggins Hospitality Group sought to reimagine Old City Hall not as a monument to what once was, but as a thriving destination that re-engages the heart of downtown New Braunfels.
Our design philosophy of adaptive reuse guided every decision: preserving the architectural integrity of Schmidt’s original design while transforming the space to meet modern needs. The vision was clear, to create a restaurant that felt both new and familiar, contemporary yet deeply rooted in the town’s history.

Honoring History, Creating Experience
Our approach balanced reverence and reinvention. We analyzed the city’s most successful hospitality spaces, learning from what worked while crafting something distinctively local. Many on our team call Central Texas home; this was more than a project, it was personal.
Every detail aimed to reflect the pride and character of the New Braunfels community.

Key Design Highlights
Preservation of Architectural Character
The project began with what made the building extraordinary, its Art Deco shell, original tile floors, and wood detailing. These elements were carefully restored and integrated into the restaurant’s design. Custom wood booths and bespoke lighting evoke early-century sophistication while inviting warmth into every space.
Indoor-Outdoor Connection
We extended the energy of the interior outward with a new open-air dining area. This addition connects the restaurant to the rhythm of downtown life, creating a seamless experience between the historic structure and the vibrant street beyond.
Framed Views & Social Transparency
Expansive wood-framed windows and a reimagined bar blur the line between public and private space. Passersby can glimpse the glow of conversation and craft within an architectural invitation to join the story unfolding inside.
Curated Private Dining
A dedicated private dining room offers intimacy for special occasions without losing the character of the building’s original craftsmanship. Materials and details echo the past, ensuring continuity of design throughout the experience.
A New Civic Anchor
Though Old City Hall no longer hosts city meetings, it continues to serve as a gathering place. Its new role as a refined dining destination restores its place as a social cornerstone alive once again with purpose, beauty, and community.
A Living Legacy
Old City Hall now stands as a testament to what great architecture can achieve when history and innovation work in harmony. What was once a civic institution is now a place of connection and celebration, its walls resonating with new stories while honoring those that came before.
At Dibello Architects, our guiding principle is simple: we build what belongs. Every project we undertake strives to feel timeless, honest, and grounded in place. With Old City Hall, we didn’t just renovate a building. We reignited a legacy, giving New Braunfels a landmark that bridges its proud past with its vibrant future.
